2 things:

First, you don’t have to love Trump to think participation trophies are silly.

Second, participation trophies are nothing new. I remember 30+ years ago getting a trophy at our season wrap up BBQ for little league and turning to my mom and asking why they were giving us trophies if we lost. She told me to just take it and say thank you.

Yeah I remember us all getting trophies at each end of the season of my first youth soccer team. Later on after I moved to Redmond and got on a select team they were more serious and frugal with that stuff.

I also remember that my Dad had a bunch of medals from his rifle team days in the early 50’s. I think he maybe had one 3rd place medal and the rest were 4th, 5th & 6th, even 7th & 8th place ones. He’s the first to admit that he was a rubbish marksman and mostly just stayed in because he had a crush on one of the girls on the team.

Point being you’re right, participation trophies aren’t anything new. Everyone just wants to be able to say they had it rough compared to “kids these days.”
