Well, sort of…kinda. There are ways around it. Obama is still running CIA blacksites and military prisons overseas. There are rules about what goes on there but I’m not sure what they are or how well they’re supervised. I suspect the rules are pretty loose and elected officials would rather not really know anyways. We are also still using rendition to countries that do torture for us. Once again, I’m not sure exactly what the rules are but it probably just means that a US official conducts the interrogation by proxy and the techniques are probably a hell of a lot worse than waterboarding.

Well, I hope not, since torture is a stupid way to go about interrogation. It is entirely possible, however, that we’re still being stupid. I’d have hoped our intelligence services were getting their shit together.

But sure. It’s illegal for cops to tune up suspects, and that still goes on all the time too. There’s plenty of shit that’s illegal, and yet happens because some people are just so damn convinced it’s the only way. I am permanently suspicious of anyone who is rah-rah about torture.
