Does it matter really? National Review still has a legacy of racism from 1957 by way of William F. Buckley in his editorial “Why the South Must Prevail”:

Maybe it’s because I never carried any kind of a torch for Buckley, but if they acted decent now, I would not hold 1957 against them. After a certain point, it starts to sound like people blathering about the Democrats voting against the Civil Rights Acts.

What’s going on now needs to be seen in context, but it also needs to be taken on its own terms to some extent.
