There’s a Chicana essayist, Michelle Serros, who wrote an essay about being asked where she’s ‘really from’. (The answer is “Oxnard, CA”)

She has a fantasy about turning the tables and asking white people on planes where they’re ‘really from’.

I always wanted to write and warn her NOT TO DO THAT. As a European American mutt myself, I can assure her that we can and will answer that question at great length. Unless she wants to spend the flight tracking the path of the white person’s ancestors across Sweden, Ireland, parts of Germany, the Midwest, to California during the Dust Bowl, and their possible descent from Charlemagne, she shouldn’t ask.
