It is entirely believable. Trump is panicking, and conservatives will sacrifice democracy to retain power. That rubric has played out over and over again.

Across the ocean, the UK is doing the same with Brexit. They will destroy their country before they give up their grasp on Parliament. Orbin in Hungary and the Law and Justice Party in Poland are likewise doing the same.
