Among the not-leftists assassinated by the Pinochet gang was General Carlos Prats, the Chilean army’s top artillery officer and army commander under Allende. A few weeks before the successful September 11 coup, he put down the so-called Tanquetazo coup, at one point wielding a Thompson sub-machine gun as he confronted coup-plotters outside the defense ministry. He resigned early in September, feeling that he had lost control of the army. He went into exile in Argentina shortly after the coup a few days later. Just over a year later, he and his wife were killed by a car bomb in Buenos Aires. The notorious assassin Michael Townley, later imprisoned in the United States for the assassination of Orlando Letelier in Washington DC, was believed responsible. Townley is currently in the witness protection program in the US.
