re: #135 Political Atheist

We have what is generally agreed to be very strong very effective laws about guns, and some very specific rules about the most powerful semi auto rifles.

We have covered this ground a lot. My take today is that we have to accept that the law of the land leaves room for the law abiding to have and use guns for defense, hunt and sport. That will inevitably mean we can not have a law so powerful it will stop ever desperate violent or deranged person from getting a gun (or worse) and killing, whether it be one person or a big spree shooting.

Once we have a set of strong laws like here in Los Angeles, you might start to think what makes us so violent (in general as a society) as to commit mayhem by whatever is at hand. So of it is obvious. Gang and theft gun crimes. Some sub5tle, the ordinary man that somehow snaps.

Guns make lethal violence too easy. I don’t find it a fair assumption that if we put lots more guns in far less violent places they would become as violent as we are. But I am certain that if we can kindly intervene in the cases of the mentally ill, or that live a lifestyle like the gangs, or do something about that drug war we will be making moves in a very helpful direction.

You make some very good points.
