If you get the chance, go to Yoichi, Hokkaido and take the tour of the Nikka distillery there. They make some seriously nice whisky and you can get free samples of it and their apple wine as well. You get off the train, walk about 100 yards from the station and there’s the distillery.

We have the rail pass and are well equipped to abuse the shit out of it make good use of it.

I will keep that in mind, because we have three days completely unplanned right now, with the goal to spend them in northern Japan. Since our last trip, the shinkansen opened to Hokkaido and we’ve certainly been talking about taking it up to Hakodate at least and then maybe taking the ferry back, so…
