There are so many of us out there that have to worry about this, for a host of reasons and situations. A universal basic income would help a lot, but it shouldn’t have an effect on your qualifications for Social Security benefits of any sort. I remember both sets of grandparents, all of them worked and the grandpas died first. My grandmothers both were able to keep their homes and lived fairly comfortably. Nothing fancy but nice. When my dad’s mom began declining due to Alzheimer’s, the family chose to sell the house because that was enough money for her care til the end of her life. The grandmas worked factory jobs, one at anchor hocking and the other for a company called Drew Shoes. A lot has changed since then, but it’s super fucked up that you can work hard for years and still end up in poverty or close to it after retirement. Something has to change. A lot of somethings.
