The tattoos on Holocaust victims were Hollerith codes. The cards matching the number could easily be sorted by machine allowing for enhanced reporting.

I’ve heard from my favourite writer that during the Battle of The Ruhr Pocket that the shooting stopped in one area. A German officer met an American officer in no man’s land and handed over a cheque to pay IBM for renting their machines. I’m not sure I believe this, but if I found confirmation I wouldn’t be surprised.
