Early in mass production of the Model T, the Dodge brothers built engines under contract for the Model T.

They were puzzled by the contract’s specifications of how each engine’s wooden shipping crate was to be constructed.

On a visit to the Model T assembly plant, they saw how the shipping crates were dissembled upon arrival, and parts were used as flooring and other wood panels in the finished car.
