In refusing to perform required infrastructure maintenance when commodity and labor prices were depressed Republicans hobbled the government at the worst possible moment. We could have capitalized on government’s unique ability to boost employment, spending and consumer confidence when needed, but instead we’ve now been forced to wait until the maintenance costs have grown through neglect and to compete with a recovering market for resources. All to satisfy an ideology that runs completely counter to all empirically data driven economic models.
