It’s an overlay of prosperity gospel thought onto more standard fundamentalism. Formerly, prosperity gospelites were a somewhat distrusted offshoot of Pentecostals, but after several decades they’ve become part of the herd. Now, Christians of that ilk identify wealth with godliness, because God loves rich people more, or something. And like you say, conservative Christians love authority figures, and the Kochs sure do throw around their “authority” with a heavy and golden hand.

Republicans are now the party of the rich and godly, while Democrats are the party of the poor and unbelievers. It’s the same us-versus-them philosophy that not coincidentally is also in the Old Testament. God rewards his chosen, and smites the Others. The other lessons from the OT and NT about charity, love, etc., are ignored. Also, that bit about the camel and the eye of the needle.
