Department of Defense: Iraqi insurgents faking claims

The Islamic insurgents sweeping across Iraq have faked some of their claims of capturing American-made weapons from Iraq’s military, the Pentagon said today — though it also acknowledged the fighters have captured some vehicles and other equipment.

Defense officials told reporters that some of the claims made on social media by the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria used years-old photos, including of weapons the U.S. never even sold to Iraq.

“There has been quite a lot of ISIS propaganda,” said Defense Department spokesman Col. Steve Warren. “Many of the photos are complete fabrications.”

For example, ISIS posted one photo that showed what it said was a captured MH-60 Black Hawk helicopter, the familiar workhorse of the U.S. Army and Navy. But as a defense official explained to reporters, not only did the U.S. not sell such aircraft to Baghdad, the picture itself had been taken years before and evidently just cut and pasted onto the Twitter around.
