A right-wing party, Fratelli d’Italia, has protested outside the temporary mosque and an Italian visitor refused to remove his shoes, arguing that if it was really just an art installation and not a proper mosque then he had no obligation to do so.

Luigi Brugnaro, a prominent businessman who is campaigning to be Venice’s next mayor, said the mosque was a “mistaken initiative which was done without taking into account people’s feelings in Venice”. […]
