well seriously, is there any reason you’re cynical about the whole thing?

Seem like its at the very very least a statement in favor of democratic principles.

Reasons I’m cynical: the army is still in control. They were in control when Mubarak was on the throne, they will veto anyone coming to power they do not like. Plus, continued/increased outbreaks of hostility toward the Christian community.

What will reduce my cynicism: seeing elections that look above-board and repeat for a few cycles. Seeing minority groups, women and the poor make some progress.

Just because people want freedom don’t always mean that people GET freedom. The desire is clearly there, but I don’t know how far it’s going to get, in terms of real change. The people at Tienanmen wanted democratic principles too.
