My original college plan was to become an oceanographer UW Oceanography department required a year in one of the “languages of mathematics” (Russian, German, or Japanese). Didn’t apply myself towards well towards the actual math in the end and got an ever so useful degree in Comparative Literature instead. I’d studied French before and the cyrillic alphabet was a headache for me (i.e. thanks for the spaces.)
