OT mini-rant:

Last night I found a full version of The Passion of the Christ on YouTube. Having never seen it as I had little interest in the subject, my curiosity nonetheless got the better of me. I clicked, scrubbed forward a bit, and found myself watching a scene where Jesus (a.s.) had been brought in front of a group of Jews (Caiaphas & the Sanhedrin?) and was being interrogated & beaten.

Holy crap, the Jews in that scene were positively diabolical! I know there had been complaints of anti-Semitism when the movie came out, and it is a Mel Gibson movie, but still…actaully seeing it acted out on screen was…sheesh…I had no idea it was that bad. I didn’t even finish watching the scene, let alone the whole movie. O_o.

When it first came out, I had a kid in my student teaching class who went off on my master teacher, mumbling about how ‘the Jews killed my Jesus’. (I don’t think he realized I was Jewish.)

I mentioned this to one of the Jesuits who ran my teaching credential program that evening. He said, “Passion of the Christ?” I nodded. He said “Yeah, I won’t go see it. Father O’Malley went, and he says it’s even worse than people have been saying.”

My only temptation to see it is that it is probably the only major motion picture that will be made in Aramaic in my lifetime, and I’d kind of like to see how much I can understand.
