It’s again the contrast with Obama and McCain/Romney. Obama chose a running mate that he felt could definitely step in and do the job and Clinton did the same thing here with Kaine. He’s a seasoned professional. He was winning state wide elections even when this state’s electorate was more conservative than it is now.
Paraphrasing something I read (here, I think): Both parties choose vice presidents as assassination insurance. Democrats choose for continuity, Republicans for prevention.
