The Dems did this to tar Chris Christie and for no other reason.

They did it to go on record as supporting gay rights and marriage equality. This isn’t an unambiguously safe position with no political risk … even in 2012 it takes courage. The idea that they did it just to tar Christie is utterly ridiculous, they’d have done the same thing if he supported the legislation. In fact they’d far prefer to have him on their side in this battle, yet he made a conscious decision to play the bigot instead.
