I’d say there’s an entire complex of subcultures that interact in and around politics: party wonks, lobbyists, politicians, and all the human infrastructure that back the former up. If the higher levels of the election machinery work anything like the backstage of local politics I’m familiar with it’s basically sliding into a bubble of priveledge…you simultaneously get the resources to indulge things prior unconsidered and a social network that insulates and obscures your activities because of the manner their interests are wed to a given politician’s status.
