I heard Amb. Ryan Crocker (was amb. to Afganistan, among other places) on NPR today. He said to give “nation” status and recognition to a group such as the Taliban by having them come to Camp David and meet with the president, was absolutely the most idiotic thing he could imagine (paraphrased). He said the entire year long negotiation with the Taliban, to the exclusion of our partner, the Afghan government, and our other allies there, was absolutely the wrong way to go about it, and if we were lucky, this would stop this whole negotiation thread. He was almost incoherent, he was so angry.
