It’s a bit unfortunate that in WWII Germany declared war on the US in response to the US declaration of war on Japan. Had Germany not done so, it would have been fascinating to see how certain elements in US politics would have been willing to deal with the Nazis, and very useful for those same elements in US politics to have their credibility severely impaired by their Nazi apologetics.

Not unfortunate at all. Germany was the bigger ultimate threat and had Hitler denounced his alliance with Japan instead it is not a sure thing that FDR could have gotten a declaration of war against Germany and Italy through Congress.
