It’s a tactic the GOP establishment have to use to keep their own people in line…this allows the nutjobs a chance to back off the topic without sounding like they are backing down, which is something they do not like to do.

Something they’re not likely to. Keeping the impeachment talk going amongst the base is necessary to get them out to the polls, so the GOP leadership is stuck between the proverbial rock and a hard place: Knowing impeachment is suicidal, but afraid to stamp out such talk for fear the base will jump ship.

It’s only going to get worse if the President goes through with talk about issuing work visas to millions of undocumented workers.
