Complete aside, how could anyone nominate a guy named Wendell to run for President? Was the GOP just throwing in the towel in ‘44?

There have been stranger names. Remember a guy named “Millard”, or that dude by the name of “Ulysses”? Or even a guy by the name of “Barack”? Willkie came close, but Roosevelt had changed his focus to the war from the economy. Which, in retrospect was a good thing (for both the economy and the war effort).
