re: #154 BatGuano

Great choice in music, BatGuano!

I have the Ken Burns’ Jazz series on videocassette, and the footage of the 1938 Benny Goodman concert at Carnegie Hall is one of the high points of that series.

It was the first outing for the Goodman band at such a “highbrow” venue, and they played it safe, by doing technically perfect, but rather bland renditions of a number of tunes, and the crowd basically sat on its hands. Then they, or I guess Benny himself decided to throw caution to the winds, and they embarked upon an extended jam of Sing, Sing, Sing, and the crowd went nuts.
