…and there totally weren’t laws on the books that involved death penalties for people found guilty of aiding slave rebellion, by, say, selling them weapons. [Note: there were…but wait there’s more! Until Emancipation civil liberties had a sizable footnote after them reading “your freedoms don’t count if you have anything bad to say slavery, or try and reach out to the enslaved.”]

…and, you know, it’s not like any act of rebellion instantaneously forfeited the lives of your friends and family, to say nothing of retributive acts of rape and torture. Because slaves weren’t, you know, desperately isolated by ignorance of their surroundings, illiteracy, and the continuous fear of arbitrary violent acts by Southern whites.
