This and the Romney/Cotton “alternative” are step two in the usual GQP playbook: First you downplay a popular Dem proposal, then you offer “alternatives” that the “liberal media” latch onto as the way to “compromise,” with the final step being to say that since neither side can agree on a “compromise” that the whole thing needs to be put on the backburner until “later.”
