Those Southern Baptists. The group explicitly formed to oppose emancipation of slaves, then promote Jim Crow, then segregated schools right up to the present day.

This constant harping of “Democrats aren’t real Christians” seems to have a racist undertone to it, since the overwhelming majority of African-Americans are both Christian, and vote for Democrats.

Maybe I’m off here, but that particular phrasing by preachers who claim “Democrats aren’t real Christians” for decades has always come off to me as a racist statement.
