Charles, your joke failed. It offended people you obviously don’t want to offend. Just apologize and let it go. You of all people should remember that waving “I’ve done so much for you” doesn’t entirely fix a gaff, only an apology does.

I’m not the enemy. Attacking people like me who try to use humor to defuse anti-LGBT bigotry is a huge mistake. I do apologize if the comment offended people, because that’s the last thing I wanted to do. And that’s the last I’ll say about it.
