Not an excuse, but he was subjected to lots of scorn as a youing black man and later an athelete back in Kentucky growing up. His pre- Olymplic experience was dreadful also, up until the time he started winning

I have no way of reading the mind of Ali, but I did live through the period. It was always my take that his conversion had a whole lot more to do with the injustice he felt with serving in Vietnam vs. black representation in America. “No Vietcong ever called me n*gger.”

Hard to argue with that. Sacrificed the best years of his like over that one. Greatest of all time he was.
