The problem for Romney is that he’s got little leverage to keep Fischer from flouncing if Fischer feels defied. If Fischer flounces, Romney is the one who loses the election. The only way to turn the tables would be for Mitt to get any ally who could win over some of Fischer’s followers.

The way you say this makes it sound like you think it would be bad to force Fischer from the Romney camp.

This makes me sad.
