I’d worry about the slobber when it gets spit back out. Just eww.
My great aunt used to have a dog, a Springer spaniel/hound mix, who liked to play ‘fetch’ with lemons off the tree in the back yard. The problem was that a lemon that has been ‘fetched’ by a dog is absolutely gross and covered with dog slobber. It was something of a trial for all of us. We switched to new lemons frequently, but the dog wasn’t happy unless you took the old one from her.
