No, it shouldn’t be. Kim Davis isn’t crazy, she simply considers reason to be of far lesser importance than obedience to God. That’s not insane, thou it’s quite wrong in her case.
My problem is with Fundamentalism of any religion. The world has changed, we have much more science since the Bible was written (and rewritten/poorly translated). Fundamentalists refuse to accept that life/society has changed.
The mentally ill also have problems seeing the world as it is.
Are they the same? Not exactly, but in many cases the comparison is an honest one. Both are extremely rigid in their thought process. Kim Davis crosses the line not because of what she believes, but because she thinks that god has instructed her to deny the rights of others. At the very least we can argue that her religion has clouded her judgment.
