I was really surprised during my travels there by all the jazz playing in bars, cafes, and restaurants as background music. In China, you might hear bossa nova, but never bebop, cool jazz, big band, or any other variety of jazz.

That’s exactly right. I had a fairly low salary and still came home with quite a bit of savings because there was nothing to do—nothing but travel to spend on. As for jazz, I know that US jazz musicians love playing Germany and Japan because of the depth of knowledge of the fans. How about China?
