Forever is a long time. Some people are hopeless (the DCCC?) but others can be persuaded if you run the right campaign. Gingrich nationalized the 1994 election — the Democrats need to do that in 2018. And they need to promote a positive message of what they will accomplish not just a negative set of ads (though those will help too).
