Well it is fun. But if you turn down a vaccination on the grounds that you’ll stake your twelve-year-old daughter’s life on the idea that she will have no sexual contact with anyone except the man she marries, and he likewise—you’re being a dumbass. (Not you, but generic you.)

And I can hear these people gearing up in hysterics about how pure they and their families are. Yeah, I said dumbass.

Seriously. I would like to have a little girl. I can’t imagine standing over her crib and saying “I have complete and total faith that you will not go down on some guy who hasn’t been born yet, junior year of high school. I have complete and total faith that you will never be the victim of a sexual assault. I have complete and total faith that the boy you’ll fall in love with and marry will not have been molested as a child or teenager. I have complete and total faith that he will not have sex with any girl he meets before you. I have complete and total faith that he’ll be honest about this. I have complete and total faith that he will never cheat on you. This applies not only to your first husband, but to the pleasant widower you will meet in the single parents support group, and everyone he has ever slept with. I AM WILLING TO BET YOUR HEALTH AND LIFE ON IT.”

Which is pretty much what some of the people I’ve talked to about this are saying to themselves.

To believe as these people believe is to deny the world around them. I mean seriously, how many married couples do these people know who were virgins on their wedding day? I know some people who waited a long time to have sex. It is possible to get through high school and even college a virgin by chance or by choice. But a virgin until your wedding day? I don’t know anybody who has done that who was born after 1969 and got married after the age of 24.
