We’re basically chimpanzees with a few tweaks to the genetic code, with the capacity for horrible violence lingering in every one of us. Society, if it’s going to work, has to at least try to be better than the sum of its parts.

Not much of a mechanism for that. If anything the larger the troop, the greater the atrocity.
