According to IDF figures Gazan militants have fired just under 1,200 rockets this year. They’ve fired 390 odd rockets since 11/14. They didn’t wake up one morning and say ‘hey, lets ramp up our rocket campaign by an order of magnitude’. Israel moved from counter battery fire to a targeting Hamas officals, Hamas responded. We don’t devote this much attention to Gaza when there is a normal volume of fire (although that’s a failry twisted concept).

Again check your timelines. November 11. One hundred Palestinian rockets. The assassination followed it. The escalation was on the Palestinian side. Furthermore, the fact that Israel suffers through this insanity for months without a serious response does not in any way not give them a right to retaliate a time of their choosing.
