You appear to be upset at acknowledging that it’s the right that has a problem with homophobia, and it’s the extreme right that would like to make homophobia policy, or keep it that way.
Let’s bear in mind that not all parts of NYC are 100% liberal, and that people come from Jersey and the boroughs to the West Village specifically to gay bash all the time.

The gaybashers aren’t liberal Dems who live on Christopher Street. Sorry.
