That’s how the NYPD rolls: They believe in deploying lots and lots of cops if its a protest about a heated issue, the idea being that their strength in numbers and capability will help ensure that there is no violence. This is sometimes known colloquially as “Peace Through Strength”.

In practice it often causes situations to grow needlessly confrontational and violent. Taking up a spacial us vs. them position makes both sides feel more threatened. I saw it happen live in Seattle on N30.
