re: #174 Justanotherhuman

It’s the third wave thing and “waxing” doesn’t even have anything to do with “basic maintenance”. Second wavers like myself (working class), even if they were middle class or came from that background, eschewed all that crap sold by industry to make women “beautiful” (since we’re not considered so in our natural state and learn to hate our own appearance).

When I first heard about “lipstick lesbians” (a Hollywood phenomenon at the time) back in the ’80s, I knew this was coming hard and strong. Beauty pageants were natural protest sites back in the day, the idea being that women should not have to sell themselves as calendar pinups in order to score a college scholarship but be seen as intelligent on their own without having to buy into Madison Ave’s idea of “beauty”.

It’s all about marketing, not about feminism.

My daughters got me into eyebrow waxing and all that stuff, because they didn’t want me to look all scuzzy at their weddings.

What I don’t understand is the “Brazilian” wax. That has to be PAINFUL. And if you’re not a swimsuit model why go through that?
