I grew up a few years behind you, and 30 miles inland. OMG do I remember smog days. The San Gabriel Mountains come up out of nowhere, 5000 feet straight up, and there were days we couldn’t see them from 10 miles away. Recess and PE classes would be cancelled (we’d watch the same goddamm 4 movies over and over again in the cafeteria), the local hospitals had their oxygen rooms just off the ER so residents could bring asthmatics and grandparents in to just hang out all day and take huffs off the tank…), SCAQMD would order all manufacturing to shut down until it cleared.

Inversion layers was my first Intro to Physics and Geology lesson, before I even learned to read.

I grew up in Yucaipa, which as next to Redlands along I-10 towards the desert and Palm Springs.

I remember the third stage smog alerts and being kept indoors all day at school in the 1970’s. I remember smog so bad in the 80’s down in Riverside and San Bernardino that you couldn’t see the mountains.

Bad stuff.
