there’s a lot of dangerous nationalism and populism in American history. We sort of gloss over a lot of it now because so much of it has developed into traditions that have little to do with their origins.

Most of our Western expansion/settlement efforts, including all the military engagements and homestead encouragement and the railroads… was a deliberate campaign to distract the North and South from hating each other.
