Usually healthier and longer lived as well. IMO, the whole AKC thing and resultant inbreeding problems does anything but “promote the best of the breed.” It’s wholly about winning ribbons and $ for the breeders. I’ll take a good mutt every time.

Our blue rat terrier was given to us by a not so great breeder; he’s been a wonderful companion for my son since he moved to Charlotte, but getting on in his dotage (born 2001). The little chihuahua mix just laid down last year and died, with no warning; he was born in 2001, also.
