Damage control:

White House qualifies Obama remark about arrest

The White House says President Barack Obama was not calling a Cambridge, Mass., police officer stupid when he criticized last week’s arrest of black scholar Henry Louis Gates Jr.

On Wednesday Obama said the police “acted stupidly” when they arrested Gates even after it was clear that he was not a burglary suspect. Gibbs said that Obama did not regret the remark, but wanted to clarify that he was not calling the arresting officer stupid.

Mr. President, what the hell kind of clarification is that supposed to be? “I wasn’t calling the police officer stupid.” As far as I know, nobody’s suggesting you did. They’re concerned about your injecting your opinion without the facts, and doing so as President of the United States. How about this kind of clarification:

“In hindsight, it was wrong of me to make any kind of comment at all. It wasn’t very presidential, and I blew it.”
