I can’t say if it’s a pan-Asian problem, but in China there is some bigotry aimed at Africans, or anyone with dark skin — even fellow Chinese. To have fair skin or a light complexion is preferable, so ladies in China avoid the sun as much as possible, and some buy skin lightening creams to achieve what we in the States would call a deathly pallor.

Here in Toronto you’ll almost always see Asian women under an umbrella on sunny days.

Most, though, I believe are first generation immigrants. Their stature and dress usually shows them as such. Second and later generations are quite acclimated and care no more about the sun than anyone else.
