Also, with regard to people not having heard of the ‘53 Iranian coup-I live in what was as of a couple years ago, apparently the most educated town in California (excluding incorporated University towns like Stanford.) According to Business Insider, anyway. Our book club read All the Shah’s Men by Stephan Kinzer last year and I was shocked at the number of people who hadn’t heard of the coup. I won’t claim I was an expert on it, but I had heard of it.

I think that the 1979 Revolution and the hostages left many Americans needing to hate the Iranian regime as virulently and inexplicably anti-American. This has led to people not looking very closely at Iran before the Revolution.
