What is windows 7? My XP installation is doing just fine, thank you very much.

Not for much longer, since support for that is about to end. I upgraded from Windows XP to Windows 7, and was very happy with the change. But Windows 8 doesn’t strike me as a good idea.

It seems that Microsoft suffers from a reverse of the Star Trek movies curse: The odd numbers of Windows since Win 95 have been seen as relatively good: Win 95 (1), 2000 (2), XP (3), and 7 (5). By contrast, the even numbered versions have become known as problematic or pieces of drek: Win 98 (2), ME (4, and the worst of the worst), Vista (6, and ultimately made decent but too late to save its reputation.), and now Windows 8 (6).
