As a retired PG, this is highly offensive. We had to fight for years to get a Professional Geoscientist licensing program set up in the State of Texas over the protestations by the Texas Professional Engineering Board. Even then, Petroleum Geologists were excepted from licensing.

I have a Master’s in Geology from Colorado School of Mines. For various reasons, I never ended up working professionally as a geologist. Therefore, I “have a geology background” when I need to describe it to people. I am not a geologist.
